Sideshow’s Songs of the Week

by Sideshow on Mar.06, 2010, under Music

I enjoy music, as most of you know, so I thought I’d post a song everyday during the week using my Blip.fm station and tweet it at the same time (if you wanted to follow at home.) Every week, I’ll recap my choices and write a little blurb about them.

Check this tag for my other “Songs of the Week” posts.

Hopefully, it’s a good chance to hear some new music (or old music) and get my take on it. I do tend to lean towards Heavy Metal and Hard Rock, so most songs will probably be in that general area, but I will veer from time to time. I know music is very much like religion and politics, so I’m not pushing anything onto you. If you don’t like something, I respect that. But, if you do, I’m more than happy to get you more info on it, just let me know.

Most entries will have a Wikipedia and Last.FM link at the end for you to get more information and listen to other songs at your leisure.

Sideshow’s Songs of the Week

This week’s theme is newer/underground bands. They may not all be completely unknown or new, but they are probably new to a lot of people. Hope to spread the word.

Sideshow’s Songs of the Week

I thought I’d start a new franchise here on the site. You know, cuz Syrana has stolen all of the good weekly memes. Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree

by Sideshow on Dec.09, 2009, under Entertainment, Music

Santa

So, you’re sitting in your living room next to your decorated Christmas tree with a glass of egg nog and wondering, “I’d really like to listen to some Christmas music, but it needs some crunch to it.” Don’t fear, I have you covered. Not to sound like a Time Life commercial, but I’ve compiled a nice collection of some decent Christmas music for you hard rock and metal heads.

Brutal Concerts Are Brutal: Review of Mastodon and Dethklok

by Syrana on Oct.21, 2009, under Entertainment, Music

Dethklok

Dethklok

Not Dethklok

Not Dethklok

We’d heard awhile ago that Mastodon and Dethklok would be coming to town.  Of course, being fans of the show Metalocalypse, we thought it’d be awesome to experience Dethklok live.  The only thing was, it was slated for a Sunday night.  We hemmed and hawed, and I already has appointments scheduled for the Monday after, so I knew I wouldn’t be able to take off of work.

But then, last Friday, I received an email from Sideshow while I was at work – confirming tickets to the concert on October 18th.

He opted to purchase the VIP balcony tickets at The Rave, and I’m glad he did.  That place was packed! (continue reading…)

Youth Gone Wild

by Sideshow on Oct.13, 2009, under Gaming, Music, Xbox 360

Too Much Rock For One HandWith today’s release of the video game Brütal Legend (which I will buy soon) I decided to check out the soundtrack and I was amazed at how long and brutal it was. In honor of this nod to metal, I wanted to allow everyone to listen to every song on this soundtrack to see what a great job they did creating it.

It plays as a kick-ass path through some of the great metal of the past and present from Black Sabbath to Dethkolk to Megadeth. Continue on to see every song on the soundtrack and a link to listen to it. Be warned: It’s brutal. (continue reading…)

Check My Brain

by Sideshow on Oct.05, 2009, under Music

Check My BrainI really enjoy music. I’m not sure how I’d spend my day without music involved at some point. I listen to it in my car, at work, while gaming and even while falling asleep. I mean, I love all of the music I own and love, but where do I find new music to listen to? I used to use local radio stations to find new music, but they have since went from a great rock station to a “let’s play everything from every decade ever for everybody and their mom” kind of station, so I don’t get new music. There are no good rock stations here in the Milwaukee area that play new music.

So, now I listen to MP3 CDs in my car. I would use my iPod, but my new iPod Touch doesn’t work with the iPod cable I had installed with my new radio. It turns out the voltage changed from the old iPod 3G to the Touch, so I can only charge it (even with a so-called converter adapter.) But, I digress.

I bet you’re asking, “So, Sideshow, where do you hear new music?” Good question and I’m here to answer it. I find most of my new music online. Mostly from services that cater to this exact problem and sometimes from friends that enjoy the same genres. Here are some great sites to visit that can help you find new music based on your tastes or playlists. (continue reading…)

Nothing Else Matters

by Sideshow on Sep.28, 2009, under Genealogy, Music

I originally did this post on my Genealogy site due to a weekly meme that another blogger creates on Saturdays, but I thought it was a good post to get people to think about their answers. I won’t make you go visit my site to read it, since it’s not that exciting unless you’re into family history research, though I’m not stopping you.

1. What is your all-time favorite song? Yep, number 1. It’s hard to choose sometimes. If you made your favorite all-time Top 40 music selections, what would be #1?

2. Tell us about it. Why is it a favorite? Do you have special memories attached to this song?

My favorite song of all-time is a pretty simple choice. It’s something I have thought about in the past. It seems I’m constantly trying to figure out my favorite musicians and songs. Overall, it’s a tough thing to choose, but my Top 1 or 2 are usually pretty well cemented. My taste in music is probably a lot heavier than most of the genealogy community, but even though my favorite band is pretty heavy, the song is not.
