Still Alive

by Syrana on Mar.08, 2010, under Gaming, General

You know, there are a lot of songs that use some variation of this post’s title in either lyrics or title.  I can think of at least 3 right now.

This is the kind of post I don’t like to write and most “how to blog” guides will warn you to never write.

Well, screw it.

I’ma do it anyway.

I apologize for my hiatus, it lasted MUCH longer than I expected.  I only anticipated being absent from the blog and Twitter for a few days while I played through Heavy Rain.  (I even had to miss an episode of Polygamerous!)

Unfortunately, a mix of work craziness (it is seriously kicking my ass right now, but I’ve complained enough through minimal tweets over the past week, me thinks) and not feeling well meant almost zero time getting intimate with my home PC.

*pats monitor* I know, baby, you were getting lonely.

Thankfully, Sideshow had my back and cranked out a few posts to keep this place from looking like a completely barren wasteland.

I’m still going to have some ups and downs until work calms back down.  I was just going to start this week off with a post and act like I hadn’t been MIA for nearly two weeks, but I love y’all more than that.

Syrana Answers Reader Questions

by Syrana on Feb.15, 2010, under Gaming, General, World of Warcraft

Last week I let you all know that I’m open to answering questions.  I’ve gotten some through formspring and a few people left great questions in the comments.  Unfortunately, the questions left in the comments were so awesome that the answers needed to marinate in my brain for a bit and fully deserving of their very own post!

So without further adieu… I shall present a wall o’ text to you!  (continue reading…)

Thought Dump: The Treadmill

by Syrana on Feb.10, 2010, under Aion, Gaming, World of Warcraft

A few years ago, Sideshow and I bought a treadmill.  At the time, we were trying to go to the gym on a regular basis to work out.  Like lots of great plans, it worked for awhile, but then trailed off.  Mostly due to the extra time it took to get there and back.  Solution: buy a treadmill for home.  I don’t have anything against treadmills and used it almost every trip to the gym… so why not have one at home to use to fill in the gaps between our trips there?

We bought it and used it for a bit.

Now it sits in the basement, unused.  Why? Well, the environment is not conducive.

I get the treadmill effect with some games.  At this point, I’d say Aion was my treadmill MMO.  Once my workout buddy stopped playing, it was hard to keep my interest.  Then there’s the grind.  Sure, I’ve said time and time again that putting seemingly mundane and repetitious tasks into game form and I love ‘em.

But the environment wasn’t quite right.

So Aion, much like my treadmill, sat unused for a lengthy period of time.  All the while I kept telling myself I should get back in there.

But I didn’t.  My account expired a few weeks ago.

I didn’t quit because I disliked it or because of World of Warcraft (which I haven’t logged into for a few weeks either).

Much like my treadmill – I enjoyed it when the environment was conducive.

I could start using either one again at anytime.

Ask And Ye Shall Receive…

by Syrana on Feb.08, 2010, under General

…an answer, more than likely.

I’ve heard that bloggers are narcissistic.  At least, that’s what I heard at a work training (seriously, what the hell?)  a couple months ago.

I suppose there’s a certain level of truth to this.  I mean, I do like to babble on and have people read/listen to me babble and comment on my babble.

So, I finally thought I’d set up this formspring question thing-a-ma-jig.  Consider it like your own private interview with moi.. ‘cept everyone can see the question and answer.  Hey, at least you can anonymously ask something.

Now, I’d love to say “Oh I’ll absolutely answer anything” but there is no way I can promise and guarantee such a thing.  But, it’d have to be a really awful question for me to ignore it.

If you are so inclined…. ask away!

On This Day… When I Was Six

by Syrana on Jan.18, 2010, under Entertainment, General, Humor

When I was a wee lass, I asked a lot of questions.  While I was generally always considered a “bright kid,” most young children have those moments.

When I turned six, my birthday was much like today.  It fell on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

I remember waking up and it being almost Christmas-like… I knew there would be presents.  My parents told me my presents were hidden throughout the house; one for each year I was.  (Ooh sneaky, learning and practicing can be fun!)

I also remember looking at the wall calendar that day.  Being ever so astute, I noticed that there was someone else’s name printed on the calendar on my birthday.

So, I asked my mother: “There is a king who’s 6 today, too?”

Double IRL Ding – Time For Syrana To Twink

by Syrana on Jan.18, 2010, under General

Image courtesy of Cupcake Sisters (Senel) @ FlickrIt’s that time of year again.  That time where Sideshow and I simultaneously ding.

Today, Sideshow enters a new bracket.  It doesn’t seem to phase him much.  Boy he’s a brave lil’ soldier.

Me, on the other hand, I have reached the top of my bracket today.

And I fully intend to go turn off my XP right now and twink for the rest of my days.

Cult of Personality

by Syrana on Dec.03, 2009, under Gaming, General, World of Warcraft

The other day I was going through my feed reader and was intrigued by this post at DoTs & HoTs.  This then led me to a post over at Tree of Life about blog personalities.  Now, I’m a curious sort.  I just had to plug the blog into Typealyzer to see what it came up with!  After I did that, I needed to find a free online personality test for myself since I don’t remember my high school results.

The Blog

So Typealyzer analyzes words used on the blog to develop a sense of the blog’s personality.  Ideally this would be the personality of the blog author, but in some cases is more reflective of the author’s blog persona.  From what I could gather, it only analyzed the first page of text.  Generally this is a pretty good snapshot of what a blog offers; however, if you’ve recently posted a lot of things outside your normal posts, you might want to hold off until the front page returns to normal (or analyze a couple times to see if the types of posts change the results or not).

Our blog came up as ESTP – The Doers

(from the description at Typealyzer):

The active and playful type. They are especially attuned to people and things around them and often full of energy, talking, joking and engaging in physical out-door activities.

The Doers are happiest with action-filled work which craves their full attention and focus. They might be very impulsive and more keen on starting something new than following it through. They might have a problem with sitting still or remaining inactive for any period of time.

I’d definitely agree that the blog is playful and full of humor.  I’d also agree that I am often good at starting projects, but not necessarily “finishing” them.  As for physical activity and not sitting still – Um, Hello? I play WoW.

The Author Behind The Blog

So what about the real Syrana.  Well, I went to Personality Test Center to take a free personality test.  I really wish I could remember how I scored 10ish years ago to see if my personality has shifted in my old (haha) age.  But, we’ll stick with what we got.

I came up as ENFJ. (continue reading…)

An Interview With Syrana’s Parents

by Syrana on Nov.29, 2009, under Family, Gaming, World of Warcraft

We all know that Sideshow and I are avid gamers.  But did you know my parents are gamers too? About a year ago, Sideshow and I piqued their interest enough in WoW to get them playing.  They each have their own account and are still enjoying the game.  Sure, Sideshow and I had told them about WoW throughout our times playing and they’d be interested in knowing our progress.  Now, it’s a bit different having them play as well.  We get to talk with them in game, my mom is a loyal reader of the blog, and phone conversations and visits are full of WoW chatter.  I thought it might be fun for you, my readers, to hear a little more about them.

… except when I asked them to participate, my dad said, “You’ll have to find your parents first…” (continue reading…)
